A man went to see his doctor because he was suffering from a miserable cold. His doctor prescribed some pills, but they didn’t help.
On his next visit the doctor gave him a shot, but that didn’t do any good.
On his third visit the doctor told the man, “Go home and take a hot bath. As soon as you finish bathing throw open all the windows and stand in the draft.”
“But doc,” protested the patient, “if I do that, I’ll get pneumonia.”
“I know,” said the doctor, “I can cure pneumonia.”
Can I Trust You?
We always put trust in our doctors and we expect them to be able to handle and fix any illness that comes our way. That leads to me to ask, do you trust God as much as you trust your doctor? I want to discuss with you, for a moment, trusting in God for whatever comes your way in life. Lots of times parents worry, “Oh I hope my baby is gonna get into the best college” or for the younger people “I really hope I get this job!” I’m here to tell you of a very simple phrase you just have to believe in when times get tough: “GOD’S GOT THIS.”
There are many scriptures I can pull from the Word to demonstrate where God said “Don’t worry, I got this.” I would like to show you one that is very powerful to me in particular. It’s the story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego.
Lies and Lions
Now if we were to open up the book of Daniel, Chapter 3 we see that it is told by the Herald “Nations and peoples of every language, this is what you are commanded to do: As soon as you hear the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp, pipe and all kinds of music, you must fall down and worship the image of gold that King Nebuchadnezzar has set up. Whoever does not fall down and worship will immediately be thrown into a blazing furnace.”
I want you to take pause, and think about that. Just for failure to worship something you may not believe in, you’d be thrown into a blazing furnace. Would YOU be willing to do what these three men did? Would you have trusted God enough to say “I don’t know when I’m gonna get caught, but when I do I know… GOD’S GOT THIS.”
That’s exactly what these three men did. “And Nebuchadnezzar said to them, “Is it true, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, that you do not serve my gods or worship the image of gold I have set up?” After telling the king they will not obey his order he tells them he will follow through with his punishment. In response to Nebuchadnezzar, Abednego replies knowing GOD’S GOT THIS. He says to the king “If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to deliver us from it, and he will deliver us from Your Majesty’s hand.”
Due to this disobedience, Nebuchadnezzar orders his strongest men to tie the men up and heat the furnace to seven times its normal heat. The guards throw Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego into the furnace with flames so hot that it killed the guards.
God’s Got This
Next we see in Daniel 3:24, “Then King Nebuchadnezzar leaped to his feet in amazement and asked his advisers, “Weren’t there three men that we tied up and threw into the fire?” They replied, “Certainly, Your Majesty.” He said, “Look! I see four men walking around in the fire, unbound and unharmed, and the fourth looks like a son of the gods.”
I’m sure most of you know what happens next. The king calls the men to come out and see him. The three men are unscathed by fire. Not a hair burnt on their head nor even the smell of smoke lingered on them! “Then Nebuchadnezzar said, ‘Praise be to the God of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, who has sent his angel and rescued his servants!’”
Can You Feel the Heat?
Many times, I think back to this scripture. I am in the US Army and I’m not exactly where I had planned on being. When I joined, it was in the hope of becoming a US Army Ranger. I went through OSUT in Ft. Benning immediately followed by Airborne school where I graduated as an honor grad.
That weekend I moved on to the Ranger Regiment footprint for a 5-week Pre-RASP where I trained and waited for the next class to begin. Phase 1 of RASP began June 11th. That was honestly one of the hardest days of my life. Physically, my hands were torn open, and my body was beat. But little did I know that, in just two days, I was going to be facing an even harder mental and emotional challenge. Wednesday morning, June 13th, I had a heat stroke following an unknown distance Ruck March.
That day was very hard for me. I was concerned for my body and my future health. How long is this going to take to recover? Why did this happen to me when I wanted this so bad? Being pumped full of IV fluid for 38 hours I just had to remind myself, GOD’S GOT THIS. I don’t know how I’m gonna deal with it. I don’t know what’s next, but I do know that GOD’S GOT THIS. He knows everything about our lives. He sits high up watching over us, making his plan even though we may never understand why He does the things He does or why He does it the WAY he does it.
Whether you’re a mother or a father, a student or an employee, you will face troubles in your life. No matter who you are, no matter what role you play, you will have worries. But I assure you God is working behind the scenes of your life. Dare to trust him, believe in His ways so that instead of being worried, you can turn it around into thanks. For example, “Lord thank you for protecting me, thank you for putting me on a better path, thank you for bringing certain people into my life.”
Now, think back to Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. They could have asked “God we’re doing the right thing! We only worship you, so WHY are we getting thrown into a blazing furnace??” But instead they praised him regardless of what happened. God could easily have prevented them from being tied up and thrown into a fire, but why did he let it happen? Sometimes God has to put troubles in our life just to show us that He’s got this. He wants us to see that He is God and what wonderful things can be done when we put our faith in Him. He wants others to see the same thing, to see what great things God can do just by showing faith, by declaring the simple phrase “GOD’S GOT THIS!”
